Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is the most common form of glaucoma, as reported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Often called the “silent thief of sight,” it develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms in the early stages, gradually affecting peripheral vision first.
Many individuals remain unaware of the vision loss until significant damage has occurred. Unfortunately, by the time they visit an ophthalmologist, a considerable amount of vision—lost due to irreversible optic nerve damage—cannot be restored. In advanced stages, glaucoma can cause tunnel vision, where only central vision remains, and if left untreated, it may eventually lead to complete blindness.

Perimetry test is a must for making diagnosis Glaucoma patients. This test is essential not only to the extent of the existing damage, but also to doci and measure the progression.
Other Tests like OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography), CCT (Pachymetry) are non invasive tests. In this test patient is asked to focus onto a light as the advance machine and its software assess the status of the nerve and the nerve fibre layer.
Glaucoma cannot be cured but it can be controlled so that further damage to the optic nerve can be slowed or halted. This can only be done through disciplined and regular treatment from an ophthalmologist. The treatment of glaucoma is life long.
1. Medical Management
In this approach, the ophthalmologist prescribes medicated eye drops to be instilled in the affected eye(s). These drops help lower the intraocular pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve.
2. Surgical Management
Surgical treatment involves creating a new drainage pathway in the eye, allowing the fluid (aqueous humor) to flow out more easily, thereby reducing eye pressure.
3. Laser Management
Laser-based procedures, such as trabeculoplasty, are used to improve fluid drainage. In trabeculoplasty, a laser is applied to the trabecular meshwork (the drainage area of the eye) to enhance outflow and lower intraocular pressure.

Laser therapy for glaucoma, such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) or laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI), is used to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye, thereby reducing intraocular pressure.
Laser therapy for glaucoma is typically well-tolerated and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Some patients may experience mild discomfort, but it is generally not described as painful.
Surgery for glaucoma is usually recommended when other treatments have not effectively lowered intraocular pressure or when the condition is advanced and poses a significant risk to vision.
Currently, there is no cure for glaucoma. However, with proper treatment and regular monitoring, the progression of the disease can often be slowed or halted, helping to preserve vision.
Early detection and treatment of glaucoma can help prevent or slow the progression of vision loss. However, if left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision impairment and blindness. Regular monitoring and adherence to the treatment plan are crucial for preserving vision.
